Last year I came across the Web page of Natsumi Hayashi, a Japanese, levitating miraculously in different places.

Her website inspired me and I found that several people shoot pictures alike. The phenomenon is called “levitation”. What exactly is Levitation? Aunt Wikipedia says:

Levitation in the paranormal context is the rising of a human body into the air by mystical means. Some parapsychology and religious believers interpret alleged instances of levitation as the result of supernatural action of psychic power or spiritual energy. The scientific community states there is no evidence that levitation exists and alleged levitation events are explainable by natural causes (such as magic trickery, illusion, and hallucination)

OK, I wanna do this… I need a model that can hover an hour over ground… Babs, of course, was the first one I asked:

” hey, can you spare me some minutes today, shoot some images? No, we have to go to Kleiner Schlossplatz… Oh, yeah, sorry, you have to stand on this box. No, no people are not staring at you…”

This is the result:

Happy with the first results I took the chance to shoot more levitation images for the Photosport theme “magical”. I asked Karo and she immediately said “…yeah, cool, let’s do it!”  and so we went into the woods on Good Friday to take pictures. We tried different places and I also did levitate.

How does it work?

Actually quite simple! It is important that you use a tripod. You take a shoot of the spot at which the model to going to levitate:

Then let the model “levitate”:

Stack the images in Photoshop and mask the box,  voilà:

Same technique out in the nature :

The stepladder I used was all but ideal, because it covered to much of the space underneath the model. The re-construction of the shadow, which is not on the first image of the spot, was quite some work! But the whole project was lots of fun an I’ll be doing more.

My message: let your thoughts levitate…
